How to Choose the Right Solar Panel for Your Home or Business

Monocrystalline, PERC, TOPCon, bifacial: solar panel terminology can be confusing. This guide explains what matters when you choose.

Solar panels are the most visible part of your system and they will be on your roof for many years, so it pays to choose carefully. Here is what to consider.

Cell technology

Most panels installed today use monocrystalline silicon cells. Within that group you will mainly see two technologies:

PERC (Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell) panels add a passivation layer to the back of the cell that helps it capture more light. PERC has been the mainstream technology for several years.

TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact) panels use N-type silicon wafers with an ultra-thin oxide layer and a polysilicon layer at the rear. The technology reduces losses in the cell, and the industry has been moving from PERC to TOPCon.

Monofacial or bifacial

Bifacial panels can also generate electricity from light reaching their rear side. The benefit depends on how the panels are mounted: they work best on elevated structures or ground mounts above reflective surfaces, and offer little advantage when mounted flat against a roof.

What to check on the datasheet

Power rating and efficiency tell you how much electricity the panel can produce and how much area it needs. Temperature coefficient indicates how much output drops as the panel heats up, which matters in Bangladesh's climate. Product and performance warranties show the manufacturer's commitments. Certifications to recognised international standards indicate the panel has been tested.

Quality matters more than a low price

A cheaper panel that degrades quickly will produce less electricity over its lifetime. It is worth choosing panels from established manufacturers with a track record.

Si Green Energy helps you compare suitable panels for your project and explains the trade-offs clearly.
